Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world. With over 1 billion active users, it’s a great place to share your content and grow your brand. But what’s the best way to format your Instagram posts? What’s the ideal Instagram post size? In this blog post, we will answer all of those questions and more! We will also provide templates for each type of Instagram post so you can create beautiful, eye-catching posts that stand out from the competition.
How To Post Different Sized Images on Instagram
You can post different sized images on Instagram by changing the size of the image or graphic that you are posting to your Instagram profile. As of right now, there are five different types of posts you can share on Instagram: single images (also known as feed posts), multiple images (also known as carousels), videos, reels, and stories. In addition to those formats, you can also upload Instagram Ads, IG Lives, and IGTV Videos. Let’s look at the ideal sizes and formats for each type of post and piece of content you can upload to Instagram.

What size should a post be for Instagram?
The size of your Instagram post should be determined by what type of post you are uploading. If you are uploading a standard, static feed post, Instagram suggests using a 1:1 ratio for your image or graphic when uploading to Instagram.
Since the recent Instagram feed update in July of 2023, I suggest posting a taller, portrait-sized image on Instagram to take up the most “digital real estate” possible with your Instagram feed posts. The most recent update to Instagram in 2023 is making the Instagram feed more video-centered than it used to be, similar to TikTok’s feed and interface.
This update means that digital marketers need to take up the most amount of “digital real estate” as possible with static image posts to be able to compete with a predominantly video-centered Instagram feed.
I suggest creating photos and graphics that are 1080 x 1350 pixels or a 4:5 aspect ratio for your static Instagram posts in 2023. This also includes static carousel posts on Instagram.
Instagram Post Size in Pixels 2023
Here is a list of the optimal Instagram post sizes in pixels for 2023:
Single photo square Instagram posts: 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1 ratio)
Single photo portrait Instagram posts: 1090 x 1350 pixels (4:5 ratio)
Multiple images (carousel) square Instagram posts: 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1 ratio)
Multiple images (carousel) portrait Instagram posts: 1090 x 1350 pixels (4:5 ratio)
Instagram video posts: 1080 x 607 pixels (1.91:1 ratio)
Instagram story posts: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)
Instagram reel posts: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)
Instagram ad posts: 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1 ratio)
IG Lives: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)
IGTV Videos: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)
According to Instagram, the ideal size for an Instagram post in 2023 is 1080px by 1080px. This is because the platform is designed for mobile users and this size will look best on all devices. If you want to take up more “digital real estate” on the feed, I suggest using a taller, portrait-sized image for your posts.
Instagram Post Size Ratio
Here is a list of the optimal Instagram post size ratios for 2023:
Single photo square Instagram posts: 1:1 ratio
Single photo portrait Instagram posts: 4:5 ratio
Multiple images (carousel) square Instagram posts: 1:1 ratio
Multiple images (carousel) portrait Instagram posts: 4:5 ratio
Instagram video posts: 1.91:1 ratio
Instagram story posts: 9:16 ratio
Instagram reel posts: 9:16 ratio
Instagram ad posts: 1:1 ratio
IG Lives: 9:16 ratio
IGTV Videos: 9:16 ratio
These are the best ratio sizes for Instagram posts in 2023. Be sure to follow this guide to ensure you are posting the correct size Instagram post according to the 2023 Instagram feed updates.
Instagram Feed Post Size
The ideal size for an Instagram feed post is 1080 x 1080 pixels according to Instagram. This size is a 1:1 ratio and is a square post on Instagram.
You can also post static images to your Instagram feed in both portrait and landscape sizes. I suggest posting your Instagram feed posts (static images) in portrait size to take up as much digital real estate as possible.
The optimal portrait Instagram feed post size is 1080 x 1350 or a 4:5 aspect ratio.
The optimal landscape Instagram feed post size is 1080 x 608 or a 1.91:1 aspect ratio.
I suggest posting in portrait size to take up more space in the feed as this is the most recent update to Instagram’s interface.
Instagram Carousel Post Size
The ideal size for multiple image Instagram carousel post is 1080 x 1080 pixels according to Instagram. This size is a 1:1 ratio and is a square carousel post on Instagram.
You can post multiple static images in a carousel to your Instagram feed in both portrait and landscape sizes. I suggest posting your Instagram feed posts (static images) in portrait size to take up as much digital real estate as possible.
The optimal portrait Instagram carousel post size is 1080 x 1350 or a 4:5 aspect ratio.
The optimal landscape Instagram carousel post size is 1080 x 608 or a 1.91:1 aspect ratio.
Similarly to single image Instagram feed posts, I suggest posting carousels in portrait size to take up more space in the feed as this is the most recent update to Instagram’s interface.
Instagram Video Post Size
The ideal size for an Instagram video post is 1080px by 608px or a 1.91:1 ratio.
This size is the ideal size used for landscape video posts on Instagram.
You can also post videos in square and portrait sizes on Instagram.
The best size for a square video on Instagram is 1080 x 1080 pixels or a 1:1 ratio.
The best size for a portrait video post on Instagram is 1090 x 1350 pixels or a 4:5 ratio.
Keep in mind that Instagram videos cannot be longer than 60 seconds.
Your video should have a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and a frame rate of 30 frames per second.
Instagram Reel Post Size
The optimal size for an Instagram reel post is 1080 x 1920 pixels or a 9:16 ratio.
This is the standard size for an Instagram reel and will not zoom your video in when posting it as an Instagram reel. This sizing makes it very simple when you are sharing an Instagram reel to your Instagram stories since they are the same size.
An iPhone records video in 1080 x 1920 pixel format, so posting videos you take on your iPhone to your Instagram reels has never been easier when it comes to formatting.
Keep in mind, your video should have a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and a frame rate of 30 frames per second.
You may need to edit your videos before posting. I suggest using a video editing app, or you can also use Canva if you want to add text and other images over your video.
Instagram Story Post Size
The ideal size for an Instagram story post is 1080 x 1920 pixels or a 9:16 ratio. This is the standard size for an Instagram story and will look best on all devices.
You can also post Instagram stories in a square or portrait size.
The best size for a square Instagram story is 1080 x 1080 pixels, but you can also post square or portrait images. They will either be zoomed in, or Instagram will add a background to your image if it is not exactly 1080 x 1080 pixels.
This is why it is best to create your designs as 1080 x 1080 pixels in Canva before uploading your designs to your Instagram stories.
An iPhone records video in 1080 x 1920 pixel format, so posting videos you take on your iPhone to your Instagram stories has never been easier when it comes to formatting.
Instagram Ad Post Size
The optimal size for an Instagram ad post is 1080 x 1080 pixels or a 1:1 ratio according to Instagram.
This is a square image that will take up the familiar space in someone’s feed.
You can also post Instagram ads in both portrait and landscape sizes. I suggest posting your Instagram ads in portrait size to take up as much digital real estate as possible.
Instagram IGTV Video Size
The ideal size for an Instagram IGTV video is 1080 x 1920 pixels or 9:16.
This is the size of a video when you are recording on an iPhone in portrait and also the same size as Instagram stories and Instagram reels.
This is the standard size for an Instagram IGTV video and will look best on all devices. Keep in mind, that your video should have a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and a frame rate of 30 frames per second.
Instagram Live Video Size
The best size for recording an Instagram live video is 1080 x 1920 pixels.
1080 x 1920 pixels is the default recording format on an iPhone when you record an IG live within the Instagram app. Instagram stories are recorded directly within the Instagram app, so there is not any extra formatting needed.
Remember to keep in mind, that your video should have a minimum resolution of 720 pixels and a frame rate of 30 frames per second.
Instagram Profile Photo Size
The optimal Instagram profile photo size is a circle of 385 x 385 pixels.
Instagram users can upload an image as their Instagram profile picture right from their phone’s camera roll. If you would like to add a bit more flair and design to your Instagram profile picture, I suggest creating a 385 x 385 pixel circle design in Canva and using that as your guide.
Best Size for Instagram Post 2023
As you can see, the best size for an Instagram post in 2023 is quite different from the optimal Instagram post size in 2021 and in previous years on Instagram.
Instagram’s feed updates are trending towards larger images and videos, so I suggest posting accordingly. This means posting video and reel content in addition to making sure your single image and carousel feed posts are in the largest portrait ratio possible as noted above.
Keep in mind that all devices are not created equal. Some people will view your images on an iPhone, while others may view them on an iPad or Android device.
The good news is that as long as you are posting in the correct aspect ratio for each type of post, your content will look great no matter what size device someone is using to view it!
Instagram Post Size Photoshop
Instagram post size in Photoshop is the same as it would be in Canva or any other design software that you choose to use.
Here are the best Instagram post sizes to use when creating Instagram posts in Photoshop:
Single photo square Instagram posts: 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1 ratio)
Single photo portrait Instagram posts: 1090 x 1350 pixels (4:5 ratio)
Multiple images (carousel) square Instagram posts: 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1 ratio)
Multiple images (carousel) portrait Instagram posts: 1090 x 1350 pixels (4:5 ratio)
Instagram video posts: 1080 x 607 pixels (1.91:1 ratio)
Instagram story posts: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)
Instagram reel posts: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)
Instagram ad posts: 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1 ratio)
IG Lives: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)
IGTV Videos: 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)
As you can see, the best Instagram post size in Photoshop is the same as the best Instagram post size in Canva or any other design software.
How to Post Full-Size Photos on Instagram
If you’re wondering how to post full-size photos on Instagram, I have good news for you! Instagram now allows users to upload images and videos in their original aspect ratio without cropping them.
This means that if you have a landscape image that is 16:09, you can now upload it to Instagram without cropping it to a square or portrait image.
To upload an image in its original aspect ratio, simply upload the image and pinch it outwards until you reach the original landscape aspect ratio. Then post your image!
This is a great new feature for those who want to share photos and videos on Instagram without having to crop them first!
Can you post 1080×1920 on Instagram?
You can’t post an image that is 1080 x 1920 pixels on Instagram. Instagram will automatically crop your image to 1080 x 1350 pixels which is a 4:5 aspect ratio.
You can post content on Instagram that is 1080 x 1920 pixels as long as the content is in video format. This is a huge update to Instagram’s video and reels feature as opposed to when you had to crop videos that were taken on your iPhone in order to post them on Instagram.
Standard Instagram Post Size 2023
The standard optimal Instagram post size in 2023 is 1080 x 1350 pixels which is a portrait aspect ratio. This is the best size to use for single-image posts and carousel posts on Instagram.
If you are posting a video or reel on Instagram, the best size to use is 1080 x 1920 pixels which is a landscape aspect ratio.
Thankfully, video content recorded on an iPhone is automatically saved as 1080 x 1920 pixels or 1920 x 1080 pixels depending on which way you have your phone turned when recording.
