Whether you’re crafting client work, building your own brand, or just want your favorite font available inside your designs, uploading custom fonts to Canva is a total game-changer. I know it doesn’t always go smoothly, and that can be super frustrating.
Fonts are a huge part of branding and design, and when things don’t work the way they should, it can slow down your momentum. So let’s walk through everything together, step by step, and get you unstuck.
This post is your full guide: how to upload fonts, what formats work, where to find the upload button (spoiler: it’s hidden if you don’t know where to look), how to fix errors, how to do it on mobile, and even what to do if your font file type isn’t supported. We’re going to cover it all in detail so you leave here confident and ready to create.
Can I upload fonts to Canva?
Yes, you can import fonts to Canva. You can add custom fonts through your project or directly using your Brand Kit. Uploading fonts is a simple process and only takes a few minutes. You must have a Canva Pro account to be able to upload fonts to your account.
Do You Need Canva Pro to Upload Fonts?
Yes, you need Canva Pro. If you’re using the free version of Canva, you won’t see the upload button anywhere because it isn’t included in the free plan. This often trips people up. They think something is wrong with their account, but it’s simply a feature that’s only available on upgraded plans. The font upload feature lives inside Canva’s Brand Kit, which becomes available when you upgrade to Pro, Canva for Teams, or Canva for Education.
Once you have access, you’ll be able to upload up to 100 custom fonts to your Brand Kit. This is especially helpful if you have a unique font you purchased, your client gave you a specific style to use, or you’re building a consistent look for your own brand. Having your fonts already uploaded makes the entire design process smoother, faster, and more aligned with your visual identity.
If you’re not sure whether your current plan includes the font upload feature, head to your Account Settings and check what version you’re using. If you’re on the free plan and you want access to the Brand Kit, consider trying the Canva Pro free trial to test things out.
How to Upload Custom Fonts to Canva
Adding fonts you want to Canva is pretty simple. In this blog post, I will break down every step for how to upload custom fonts to Canva, what types of fonts you can upload to Canva, and where to get fonts to upload to Canva. Uploading fonts to Canva only takes a few minutes, and once they’re uploaded, you can use them in any design.
If you want to go even deeper, I created a YouTube tutorial that shows you exactly how to design your own custom font from scratch and then bring it into Canva. If you’re designing your own fonts, you can use a pen and paper, or do it the way I prefer, and draw my font on my iPad Pro (13-inch M4), using my Apple Pencil Pro, and Paperlike screen protector. It’s crazy how much it makes it feel like you’re drawing with a real pen on paper.
Download Fonts to Your Computer
Before you can upload a new font to Canva, you need to choose your new fonts and download them to your computer. There are many places you can find fonts online, including from font designers like myself. You can buy my fonts and upload them to your Canva account and use them in your designs!
What fonts are compatible with Canva?
Canva accepts these three font file types:
- TTF (TrueType Fonts)
- OTF (OpenType Fonts)
- WOFF (Web Open Font Format)
These are the most common formats used for fonts, and if you’ve downloaded your font from a platform like Google Fonts, Creative Market, Font Squirrel, or Envato Elements, you’re probably working with one of these already. These file types are considered industry standard and work across most platforms, including Canva.
However, there are several file types Canva does not support. Canva does not accept .TTC, .SVG, .FNT, .EOT, or any other file extensions that aren’t listed above. If you try to upload an unsupported file, you’ll get an error message that tells you it isn’t compatible.
How to Upload Fonts to Canva on Desktop
- Open Canva in your browser.
- From the left-hand menu, click Brand and then select Brand Kit.
- Scroll to the Brand Fonts section.
- Click “Upload a font.”
- Select your .ttf, .otf, or .woff font file from your computer.
- Confirm that you have the rights to use the font.
- Click “yes, upload anyway!”
- Use your new font in your design!
That’s it. If everything checks out and your file is the right type, Canva will process the font and add it to your Brand Kit. Once it’s uploaded, you can access it anytime you’re creating new content.
Here’s a YouTube video to walk you through how to upload fonts to Canva on desktop.
Pro tip: If your font comes with multiple styles, such as Bold, Italic, Light, or Medium, make sure to upload each one separately. Canva treats each version as its own font upload. This gives you more flexibility in your designs and helps maintain your typography hierarchy across different projects.
Uploading fonts is especially helpful if you’re working with clients who have strict brand guidelines. Instead of trying to find something similar in Canva’s default font library, you can use exactly what the brand requires.
Where can I find the fonts I uploaded to Canva?
Canva comes with several great free fonts by default. If you upload your own fonts that you have purchased or downloaded, they will also be available throughout your Canva account. You can find all the fonts available to you in the “Fonts” section of Canva, or in the font selection drop-down menu in any design project.
How to Use Your Uploaded Fonts
Once your fonts are uploaded, using them is really easy. Open any Canva project and click on a text box. In the font dropdown menu at the top, scroll down until you see your Brand Fonts section. You’ll find your custom font right there alongside any default fonts you’ve added to your Brand Kit.
If you uploaded more than one version of the same font, like bold or italic, you’ll see a small arrow next to the name. Click that to toggle between styles. This makes it easy to create hierarchy in your designs and use consistent font styling across headers, body copy, and captions.
Uploaded fonts will only show up if you are using the same Canva account that uploaded them, and if you’re working inside a workspace that has Brand Kit access. If you switch to another team or a shared workspace that doesn’t have the same font uploaded, it may not appear in the dropdown.
Uploading and Using Brand Kit Fonts in Canva
If you have a Canva Pro account, you can upload fonts to your Canva Brand Kit. This is a great way to keep all of your brand’s fonts in one place and make them easily accessible when you’re working in Canva.
You can upload any font file to Canva if it is a .otf or .ttf file. Follow the step-by-step tutorial below on how to import a font to Canva.
How to Upload New Fonts in Canva with Pictures

2. Click on your Canva Brand Kit

How to Upload Fonts in the Canva Mobile App
Yes, you can upload fonts on mobile. It’s not quite as obvious as it is on a desktop, but the process is very doable. Canva’s mobile app allows you to upload fonts in the same way that you can in Canva on your browser.
- Open the Canva app and log in.
- Tap the Menu icon (three lines) in the corner.
- Tap Brand, then tap Brand Kit.
- Scroll down to Fonts.
- Tap the plus icon or the Upload option.
- Select the font file from your device or cloud storage.
Once the font is uploaded, it will appear in your Brand Kit just like it does on desktop. You can use it immediately in any mobile design.
If you don’t see the option to upload fonts on mobile, here’s what to check: First, make sure you’re logged into a Canva Pro account. Second, make sure you’re accessing the Brand Kit specifically. If you’re in the middle of editing a project and try to upload a font from within the editor, the option may not be available. Navigate to your Brand section instead.
Using mobile to upload fonts can be a convenient option if you’re working on your tablet or phone while traveling or away from your main computer.
How to Add Fonts to Canva on Android
You can add fonts to Canva on your Android using the Canva app. You can follow the same steps to upload fonts to Canva on your Android through your Brand Kit in Canva.
If Canva Font Failed to Load
If your font failed to load in Canva, make sure that you are using a .otf or .ttf file. Also, make sure that your font file is under 50 MB. If it is over 50 MB, you’ll need to compress the file size.
You can use an online compression tool to reduce the file size of your font. After you’ve compressed the file, try uploading it to Canva again. If you’re still having trouble, reach out to Canva’s customer support team for help.
Common Upload Errors (and How to Fix Them)
Font uploads don’t always go perfectly the first time. Here are some of the most common issues people run into and how to solve them quickly.
Upload Failed:
This error usually pops up if your file format isn’t supported or if the file is broken in some way.
- Double-check that your file is .ttf, .otf, or .woff.
- Rename your file. Avoid using symbols, numbers, or special characters in the file name.
- If the font file was inside a zip folder when you downloaded it, make sure it’s fully extracted before uploading.
- Try re-downloading the font directly from the source website in case your file was corrupted.
- Use Google Chrome when uploading. It’s the most stable browser for Canva.
Can’t See the Upload Button:
This happens if you’re not in the Brand Kit or if you’re not logged into a Pro account.
- Double-check that you’re using the correct Canva login.
- Make sure you’re in the Brand Kit, not editing a project.
- Try switching browsers or clearing your cache.
- Refresh the page or log out and back in.
Upload Button is Greyed Out:
This means you may be in the wrong workspace. If your workspace doesn’t have access, you won’t be able to upload fonts.
- Switch to the Brand Kit-enabled workspace associated with your Pro account.
- Look in the top-left corner to confirm which workspace you’re in.
- If your workspace doesn’t have access, you won’t be able to upload fonts
Do You Need a License to Upload Fonts?
Yes, Canva will ask you to confirm that you have the legal rights to use any font you upload. This is important because just downloading a font for free does not always mean you’re allowed to use it for business, branding, or product sales.
Many free fonts are only approved for personal use. If you’re using fonts in a commercial setting (like for client work, your own products, or digital templates), you’ll need a commercial license. Always check the terms and usage rights before uploading.
Fonts from Google Fonts are safe for commercial use and are a great option if you need flexibility. If you purchased a font from a site like Creative Market, MyFonts, or Fontspring, look for a licensing document in the download folder. If you’re unsure, contact the font creator directly.

Canva Font Finder
If you’re looking for a specific font but don’t know the name, you can use Canva’s font finder tool. With the font finder, you can search by how the font looks to find the perfect match for your design.
To use the font finder, open Canva in your browser and click on “Text” in the left-hand menu. Then, click on the “Fonts” tab and enter a keyword into the search bar. Canva will show you all of the fonts that match your search.
Once you’ve found a font you like, click on it to add it to your text box. You can then use that font in your design.
Canva Pro Fonts
Canva Pro fonts give you more creative freedom and control over your brand visuals. While the free version of Canva offers a great selection of fonts, upgrading to Pro opens the door to advanced features like uploading your own fonts, setting default brand typography, and accessing premium typefaces you won’t find in the basic font library.
When you have a Canva Pro account, you get access to the Brand Kit, which includes a dedicated section for Brand Fonts. This is where you can upload custom font files, organize different font styles (like bold, light, italic), and assign them to headers, subheadings, and body text for quick use in any design. Once your brand fonts are uploaded, they’ll be saved across your account so you can access them in one click without having to scroll through the entire font list.
This feature is especially useful if you’re a service provider, digital product creator, or educator who needs to stay on-brand across different types of content, whether you’re making social posts, client presentations, or lead magnet PDFs. It also helps when collaborating with a team or virtual assistant because everyone can access the same set of pre-approved fonts inside the shared workspace.
In short, Canva Pro fonts streamline your workflow, boost brand consistency, and give you full control over the typography in your designs. And once you’ve experienced the convenience of custom font uploads and font presets, it’s really hard to go back.
